I sat in Kellan’s hospital room the next morning, waiting for him to wake. The minutes turned into an hour, but they felt like an eternity. I didn’t quite feel whole, and it had nothing to do with failing my exam. It wasn’t about Kellan, either. At least, I didn’t think it was. I couldn’t really explain it. All I knew was that my insides felt raw—empty. I’d come to the academy to make an impact on the world… and now I wasn’t sure that was going to ever happen.

Celina had been here earlier, probably to gloat about winning the Chancellor’s Award. I’d hid out in a corner of the waiting room until she left, then snuck inside while Kellan was sleeping. What I could gather from listening to the nurses was that the cut had been deeper than we thought and he’d lost a lot of blood. He’d recover, but he was very fatigued from it all.

I thought coming here would allow me to apologize to Kellan about everything that had happened. I knew it wasn’t my fault that the roof had collapsed on him, but I still felt like I should be sorry about something. Maybe it had to do with everyone yelling at me afterward about it. My professors, my parents when they heard… Laura seemed sympathetic—she said I’d done the right thing—but I hadn’t had a chance to talk to any of my other friends yet.

Maybe that’s what I was hoping for from Kellan, that he’d confirm what Laura said and tell me I did the right thing. I mean, would he rather I left him? Tossed him out the window? I did what I had to do… right?

Kellan shifted a little, and I straightened in my seat. His eyelids fluttered open, and he glanced around in confusion, like he couldn’t figure out where he was. Then his eyes caught my face, and he relaxed.

“Kellan…” I said softly, not sure where to start. My body involuntarily moved toward his, but I jerked back before I could touch him. “I’m sorry.”

“Sorry for what?” he asked in a strained voice. “You saved me, didn’t you?”

I shook my head, though I didn’t know why. I had saved him.

I knotted my hands in my lap. “I—I guess so, but I don’t know if I did it in the right way.”

“Is there a right way to save someone?” he asked. He started to sit up, but he groaned and fell back down onto the bed.

I was on my feet in an instant. “Does it hurt? What’s wrong?”

“No.” He waved me off. “Just stiff is all. And hella thirsty.”

I grabbed the water bottle beside his bed and handed it to him. He slowly pushed himself to a sitting position.

He took a swig, then spoke in a clearer voice. “Did they freak out?”

“Did who freak out?” I asked.

“Everyone?” he asked with a raised eyebrow. “You exposed yourself last night. It’s kind of a big deal.”

“Oh, so you remember,” I said flatly. Somehow, I had hoped he’d forgotten most of the night.
